Opening hours shuffle around constantly, especially at weekends — check before you set the alarm. Nothing ruins a long run like sprinting toward a closed shutter.
Ancoats
Ancoats Coffee Co., Royal Mills. A working roastery inside an early-1900s cotton mill, beans roasted on site on a 6kg Giesen, doors open from 8am on weekdays. Canal towpath run, then a single-origin filter among the original ironwork. Industrial suffering, industrial recovery.
Pollen. Canal-side, minimalist, and the city's gold standard for sourdough and pastry. Home of the cruffin — a croissant-muffin hybrid in rotating seasonal flavours that has ended more carb-guilt debates than any nutritionist. The queue forms early; so do runners.
Just Between Friends, Ancoats. Compact, coffee-first excellence (sibling shop on Tib Street) for the runner who's gone stiff sitting down and needs the transaction efficient.
Northern Quarter
Idle Hands, Dale Street. Incredible specialty roasts alongside famous handmade pies. A pie is a legitimate post-long-run meal. We will not be taking questions at this time.
Ezra & Gil. The NQ staple — always buzzing, industrial-warm, and a brunch menu that justifies double-digit mileage. Arrive sweaty; you'll match the aesthetic.
Pair it with the run
Manchester's miles: the Ashton and Rochdale canal towpaths straight out of Ancoats (flat, fast, barge-adjacent), the Fallowfield Loop's traffic-free greenway, Heaton Park's hills and its enormous, friendly parkrun, and the Mersey riverbank for long-run Sundays. The rules
The cruffin queue respects effort but not queue-jumping. Wet kit dries; wet phones don't — zip pocket, always. Cake (or pie) past 10K is mandatory. And the refer-a-friend fiver buys your recruit's first flat white.
