Opening hours shuffle around constantly, especially at weekends — check before you set the alarm. Nothing ruins a long run like sprinting toward a closed shutter.
York
Spring Espresso. Three sites across the city — Fossgate, Lendal and counting — roasting in-house, and named among Britain's top thirty coffee shops. The seasonal single-origin rotation rewards repeat visits, which your training plan conveniently mandates.
Kiosk. The other name in the "best coffee in York" argument, and the argument is friendly because both sides win.
Gatehouse Coffee, Walmgate Bar. A café inside an actual medieval barbican — you drink your Allpress espresso inside eight hundred years of defensive architecture. No other post-run venue in Britain has arrow slits.
The county beyond
Harmony Coffee. York's modern roaster, supplying single origins to the county's better counters — the name to look for on menus from Harrogate to the coast.
Pair it with the run
York's runs are history lessons at pace: the full city walls circuit (3.4 km of elevated medieval sightseeing, tourists as slalom gates), the Ouse riverside path in both directions, Knavesmire's flat parkrun on the racecourse, and the field-path out to Bishopthorpe for long-run Sundays. Beyond York, North Yorkshire is Dales and Moors — where every run is a route march and every café earned twice.
The rules
Walls circuit etiquette: walkers have priority, always — it's their wall too. Cake past 10K is mandatory and York invented most of the relevant confectionery. Recruits drink on the refer-a-friend fiver.
