Opening hours shuffle around constantly, especially at weekends — check before you set the alarm. Nothing ruins a long run like sprinting toward a closed shutter.
Guildford
Canopy Coffee. Guildford's beloved specialty multi-roaster — small batches from the likes of Origin, Square Mile and North Star, two espresso options at any time, plus pour-over through the Kalita Wave or Chemex for runners who finish their miles with opinions about extraction.
Surrey Hills Coffee, Jeffries Passage. Roasting since 2014, now in bigger premises plus a second café, The Pod at London Square. The name doubles as a warning: those hills are your training route, and they know it.
Fresco DeliKafessen. Mediterranean-inspired café with excellent Italian coffee, Greek pastries and organic ice cream — because sometimes a long run earns you all three food groups.
Lily London, Tunsgate. A coffee stall in an actual telephone box. Britain's smallest post-run venue, possibly its most charming, definitely its quickest queue.
The Surrey Hills proper
Chimney Fire Coffee, near Dorking. Founded in 2016 by a roaster with coffee and cocoa experience across Africa, roasting in the hills themselves. Pair with a North Downs trail run — Box Hill's steps if you're feeling honest about the club motto — for the complete smug package.
Pair it with the run
Surrey is the strongest running county in the south and knows it: the North Downs Way, Box Hill's 275 steps, the River Wey towpath through Guildford for flat tempo work, and Newlands Corner for trail miles with a view. Every route above ends within striking distance of proper coffee. Plan backwards from the café; this is standard club doctrine.
The rules
The pour-over takes four minutes; you've just run for an hour — you can wait. Cake is mandatory past 10K. Muddy trail shoes stay outside or get carried, you animal. And the refer-a-friend fiver exists precisely so your training partner's flat white is on us.
