The pioneers
Quarter Horse Coffee, Bristol Street. A pioneer of Birmingham's specialty movement, roasting its own beans on site. Canal towpath run — Birmingham famously has more canal mileage than Venice, a fact every local runner is legally required to mention — then a roastery-fresh espresso.
Faculty Coffee, Piccadilly Arcade. Pouring since 2013, always a guest roast on the grinder, staff who know exactly what they're doing. Tiny, brilliant, steps from Grand Central — the run-commuter's reward.
The city centre regulars
200 Degrees. Two buzzing cafés — Colmore Row and Lower Temple Street by Grand Central. Reliable specialty within a cool-down of anywhere central.
Medicine Bakery, New Street & the Mailbox. Bakery-gallery hybrid where the cake counter is the main event — pastries that demand double-digit mileage as a down payment. Bring appetite and no shame.
The wider scene
Greater Birmingham now counts forty-plus independent coffee shops and the fastest-improving scene outside London — whichever suburb your miles end in, from Kings Heath to the Jewellery Quarter, someone nearby is doing serious things with a roaster.
Pair it with the run
Birmingham's miles: the canal network from Gas Street Basin (flat, endless, zero traffic lights), Cannon Hill Park and its famous parkrun, Edgbaston Reservoir laps, and the Rea Valley route south. The canals mean you can run ten miles through a major city and meet nothing but ducks and one confused heron. Then espresso.
The rules
The Venice fact may be stated once per run, maximum. Cake past 10K: mandatory. Canal-side puddles are deeper than they look — the sweat hides the splash anyway. New recruits: refer-a-friend fiver, first flat white sorted.
