The post-run coffee is not a reward. It's part of the run — the final split, the one that happens sitting down. Carmarthenshire takes this seriously, in the way that a county with a long coastline, a hilly interior and a lot of rain generally does. You run somewhere wet and windy, and then you need a warm room with a flat white in it.
What follows is a short list of real places that sell real coffee, spread across Llanelli, Carmarthen, Llandeilo and Kidwelly. We have not tried to be exhaustive. We have tried not to send you to a cafe that closed in 2023, which, going by the listings we trawled, is a surprisingly easy mistake to make in this part of Wales.
Opening hours change, and we have deliberately not printed them. Check the cafe's own page before you plan a long run around a closing time.
Llanelli and the coast
Shire Coffee at Hwyl, Llanelli
Shire describes itself as an independent coffee business serving speciality drinks and cafe food. The town-centre cafe at Hwyl pours a house blend from Coaltown, with guest roasts from the likes of Ue, Round Hill and Skylark rotating through. There is also a Shire van at Sandy Water Park on Thursdays to Saturdays, which is extremely convenient if your route goes that way and slightly sinister if you are trying to cut a run short.
Y Barbican at Parc y Bocs, Kidwelly
A bistro and bakery on the Carmarthen Road, doing brunch and lunch. Kidwelly sits conveniently along the stretch of coast you will probably be running anyway, so this is the pick if you have gone further than planned and need an excuse to stop.

Carmarthen
HMY
A coffee house that is also a custom painting and clothing brand, with a leaning towards two-wheeled gear. Single-origin flat whites, and custom boots and jerseys on display. You will arrive in running tights and feel faintly under-dressed for the bike crowd. Order the coffee anyway.
Time Coffee Bar, King Street
A friendly coffee bar that also does lunch. Listed as open at the time of writing, which is more than we can say for several of its neighbours. A sensible, uncomplicated stop for someone who wants a drink and a sit-down rather than a lifestyle.
Llandeilo and the Tywi valley
Diod, Rhosmaen Street
One of two places a local guide singles out for speciality coffee in Llandeilo. It is a proper small-town high street stop, the sort where you can stand dripping slightly by the door and nobody makes a fuss.
Flows, Market Street
The other one. Between Diod and Flows you can make a perfectly decent two-cafe argument out of a single Saturday, which is the correct number of cafes for a long run.

Pair it with the run
Llanelli Coast parkrun has been going for years, and is the obvious Saturday morning option for the Llanelli end of the county. Check parkrun.org.uk for the current course details and start time before you set an alarm. For longer miles, the Millennium Coastal Park and the Wales Coast Path run along the Llanelli shoreline towards Kidwelly, which gives you a flat, open, windy stretch and a cafe at each end if you plan it properly. Pembrey Country Park, further round the bay, has a licensed restaurant called Yr Orsaf, though a restaurant is not a cafe and the rules below are quite clear on this.
The rules
Carmarthenshire follows the usual house rules. Coffee within thirty minutes of finishing. Cake past 10K: mandatory. Anyone who says they are “not that hungry” after a long run is lying to you or to themselves. Bring a friend, and if they are new to running, you may be owed a tenner — see the refer-a-friend fiver.
What to wear in west Wales
It rains. Not always, but often enough that you should plan as if it will. A cap keeps the worst of it out of your eyes, which is the entire point of the Brow Mop Running Cap. A bad pair of socks on a wet coastal path is how you end up with blisters before you reach the cafe, so the Blister Running Socks earn their place. The rest of the range lives in The Kit.

Common questions
Where can I get a good coffee after running in Llanelli?
Shire Coffee at Hwyl in the town centre is the obvious answer, serving speciality drinks and cafe food with guest roasts alongside a house blend. There is also a Shire van at Sandy Water Park on certain days, so check before relying on it.
Is there a parkrun in Carmarthenshire?
Llanelli Coast parkrun is the one we found. Events can pause or change course, so check the official parkrun website before travelling.
Where is the best coffee in Carmarthen town?
HMY, a coffee house with a cycling and custom clothing side, is the standout speciality pick we found. Time Coffee Bar on King Street is a solid second.
Are there good coffee shops in Llandeilo?
Diod on Rhosmaen Street and Flows on Market Street are both singled out for speciality coffee in a local guide. Neither needs a booking, and neither will mind a damp runner.
Can I run the coast path from Llanelli towards Kidwelly?
The Wales Coast Path covers a section from Llanelli to Kidwelly Quay. Check a current route map for surfaces and distances before committing to it, and carry a layer because the coast is exposed.
