The Best Post-Run Coffee Shops in Cumberland

Runner in Ordinary Mile Club kit after a run in Cumberland

The post-run coffee is not a reward. It's part of the run — the final split. This is one of our county guides to the best independent coffee within cool-down distance of your miles: great beans, proper cake, and staff who don't flinch at a damp runner.

Opening hours shuffle around constantly, especially at weekends — check before you set the alarm. Nothing ruins a long run like sprinting toward a closed shutter.

Carlisle

The Buttered Cat, Kinmont Arcade

A small independent tucked into the historic arcade, doing proper speciality coffee and fresh local food seven days a week. It is exactly the kind of place that looks far too smart for someone in a sweat-soaked base layer, and exactly the kind of place that will serve you anyway.

Foxes Cafe Lounge, historic quarter

An award-winning independent that has been collecting Best Cafe in Carlisle gongs for years. Sofas, big mugs, and the kind of low lighting that hides the fact your legs have stopped working properly.

John Watt & Son, city centre

A coffee roaster and tea blender that has been going since 1865, back when a long run meant walking to the next village because there was no alternative. If you want beans to take home and pretend you know what you are doing with them, this is the stop.

Keswick

Merienda, town centre

Relaxed, dog-friendly, artisan coffee and daily specials built from local ingredients. Good for the post-fell-run stare into the middle distance while you work out whether that descent was worth it.

Jasper's Coffee House

Independent since 2016, pouring locally roasted Carvetti coffee alongside homemade cakes and things like Cumbrian rarebit. A genuinely Cumbrian cup after a genuinely Cumbrian amount of climbing.

The Square Orange Cafe

A cosy bar and eatery in the middle of Keswick with coffee from Cumbrian roasters and beer from local microbreweries — a dangerous combination at 11am on a Saturday, but we are not here to judge.

Cafe HNW, Upper Fitz Park

Cycle-friendly, runner-tolerant, coffee, cake, lunches and churros. Roughly forty seconds from the Keswick parkrun finish, which is either excellent planning or a cruel test of willpower.

Whitehaven and the west coast

Howling Wolf Artisan Bakery and Cafe, Whitehaven

Breakfast and lunch built on local suppliers, coffee and teas from the Lake District, and cakes, pastries and bread baked fresh on site every day. It picked up a VisitEngland accolade for food and drink, which is more decoration than any of us will collect this year.

The Harbour Master Coffee House and Bar, Whitehaven harbour

Sat in the historic harbour, doing bacon sandwiches, toasties and crisp butties at prices that will not make you cry. Sea air, salt on the lips, and the smug feeling of having run before the tourists were awake.

Cockermouth

Shill's

A community hub as much as a cafe, serving up a proper taste of the region's best produce. Perfect after a loop out along the Derwent, when you need calories and someone to tell you the weather is closing in.

Pair it with the run

Carlisle parkrun is the obvious Saturday anchor, and the city sits right on the Hadrian's Wall Path — head west along the River Eden for flat, honest, entirely un-dramatic miles. Keswick parkrun runs through Fitz Park, and the old railway path out toward Threlkeld is the rare Lake District route where you can look at the fells rather than being punished by them. Whitehaven parkrun handles the coast. And if you want the full Cumbrian experience, pick any fell above Keswick, run up it badly, walk down it worse, and reward yourself accordingly.

Fair warning: Cumberland does not really do flat. Every route here has a hill in it somewhere, usually at the exact point you decided you were feeling good.

The rules

Cake past 10K: mandatory. Cake past 10K with 400m of climb in it: mandatory, and you get a second slice. Do not apologise for how you smell — everyone in a Keswick cafe on a Sunday morning smells like wet Gore-Tex and regret. Do not order a decaf and then tell people about the fell you just did. And do not stand in the doorway stretching; there is a queue, and they have been in the rain too.

Tell a friend where the good coffee is and you both get a refer-a-friend fiver. Which is, roughly, one flat white and a small percentage of a flapjack.

Kit for the coffee run

Running to a café means being seen in public in running kit, which focuses the mind. The Brow-Mop Cap deals with sweat before it reaches your eyes and with your hair afterwards, and the Agony Tee does not go transparent when wet. See The Kit.

Common questions

Where is the best post-run coffee in Carlisle?

We would go to The Buttered Cat. Good coffee, no attitude, and close enough to the routes below that you can finish the run at the door.

Is it rude to turn up in running kit?

Not in Cumberland, and not anywhere with a decent running population. The unwritten rule is simple: do not drip on anyone, do not take the big table on your own, and do not linger over one flat white for two hours.

Can I buy beans as well as a coffee?

Yes, at the roasteries listed above. Buying a bag on the way out is the traditional way of justifying having driven to a café you could have run to.

Coffee or food first after a run?

Both, ideally at the same time. If you have gone over ninety minutes, order actual food rather than relying on cake to do a job it was never designed for. Then order the cake anyway.

How do I turn this into an actual run?

Pick a café, work backwards. Most of the towns here have a parkrun or a riverside path within easy reach, which are listed above. Finish at the door and the cool-down takes care of itself.
