Opening hours shuffle around constantly, especially at weekends — check before you set the alarm. Nothing ruins a long run like sprinting toward a closed shutter.
The pioneers
Artisan Roast. Edinburgh's much-loved independent roastery and — together with Glasgow's Dear Green and Steampunk — one of the pioneers of specialty coffee in Scotland. The original Broughton Street site remains a rite of passage.
Fortitude Coffee. Established 2014, now running a roastery plus two cafés including the Hamilton Place site in Stockbridge. The name alone qualifies it for this club.
The precision merchants
Lowdown. Rated among the UK's best specialty venues — exact, quiet, brilliant filter coffee in a city that reportedly drinks more coffee per head than anywhere else in Britain. A statistic we choose to believe.
Machina Coffee. One of Edinburgh's leading roasters. Arthur's Seat at dawn, Machina by nine, moral superiority until at least early afternoon.
Pair it with the run
Edinburgh may be Britain's best running city and its topography wants you to suffer: Arthur's Seat's summit loop (a genuine mountain in a city centre, 250m of honest climbing), the Water of Leith walkway from Stockbridge to the sea at Leith, Holyrood Park's endless variations, the Meadows for flat tempo work, and Cramond's famous seafront parkrun. Every descent ends near a roastery. The city planned this, we're sure of it.
The rules
Arthur's Seat wind at the summit doesn't count against pace — nothing at the summit counts, only surviving it. Cake past 10K: mandatory, shortbread accepted. The cobbles are a calf workout, bill them as such. Recruits drink on the refer-a-friend fiver.
