Opening hours shuffle around constantly, especially at weekends — check before you set the alarm. Nothing ruins a long run like sprinting toward a closed shutter.
St Albans
Nkora Coffee. Independent, charming, and pouring expertly crafted classics with a standout Costa Rica blend. St Albans parkrun in Verulamium Park is ten minutes' jog away — a course that runs past actual Roman ruins, which puts your 5K into humbling historical context.
George Street Canteen. Family-run, independent, doing British and Mediterranean breakfasts on the prettiest street in town. The long-run brunch of record.
Tring
The Espresso Lounge. "Definitely the place to go for coffee in Tring," say the locals, and the locals are right. The Chilterns' post-trail refuelling point — Tring Park's woods and chalk hills start five minutes away.
Bishop's Stortford
Alberts. Friendly, welcoming, great value, fresh coffee, proper breakfast — the complete Sunday long-run package.
Beans N'Brunch. A local favourite doing exactly what the name promises, in the correct order.
Windsor
Cinnamon Cafe, Windsor Royal Station. Leather sofas under lofty wood-beamed ceilings inside the old royal station. Finish the Long Walk — Windsor's dead-straight, deceptively lumpy 2.6 miles of Great Park avenue — and recover where Victorian royalty caught trains.
Milton Keynes & Stony Stratford
Bogota Coffee Company. MK's beloved independent specialty bar — fairly priced, quality-obsessed, supporting artisan farmers.
Canal St. Coffee, Campbell Wharf. Marina-side specialty with in-house patisserie by a Bake Off quarter-finalist. Canal towpath tempo run, then pastry with credentials.
Out of Office & Mile Zero, Stony Stratford. The original Out of Office opened here in 2017 (now also in Newport Pagnell and Olney); Mile Zero is the highly-rated neighbour. A town of 8,000 with two proper coffee shops — the home counties' best ratio.
Pair it with the run
The home counties' finest: Verulamium Park and the Alban Way in St Albans, the Chiltern trails above Tring, the Stort Navigation towpath from Bishop's Stortford, Windsor Great Park's endless (deer-supervised) miles, and MK's redways and canal paths — the flattest PB territory in the south. Every route ends at coffee. That's not coincidence; that's route design.
