The Best Post-Run Coffee Shops in Staffordshire

Runner in Ordinary Mile Club kit after a run in Staffordshire

The post-run coffee is not a reward. It's part of the run — the final split. This is one of our county guides to the best independent coffee within cool-down distance of your miles: great beans, proper cake, and staff who don't flinch at a damp runner.

What we wear for this

The café run has one requirement the rest of your training does not: you have to stop, sit down, and stay comfortable. Technical fabric matters more here than on any tempo session. Ours is the Agony Tee, the 7 inch Suffer Shorts and The Blister Socks, or the lot in The Full Kit.

Kit for the coffee run

Running to a café means being seen in public in running kit, which focuses the mind. The Brow-Mop Cap deals with sweat before it reaches your eyes and with your hair afterwards, and the Agony Tee does not go transparent when wet. See The Kit.

Common questions

Where is the best post-run coffee in Stoke-on-Trent and the Potteries?

We would go to The Glost House. Good coffee, no attitude, and close enough to the routes below that you can finish the run at the door.

Is it rude to turn up in running kit?

Not in Staffordshire, and not anywhere with a decent running population. The unwritten rule is simple: do not drip on anyone, do not take the big table on your own, and do not linger over one flat white for two hours.

Coffee or food first after a run?

Both, ideally at the same time. If you have gone over ninety minutes, order actual food rather than relying on cake to do a job it was never designed for. Then order the cake anyway.

Are there good running routes near these cafés?

Yes, and they are the reason the list is arranged this way. See the routes section above for the parkruns, paths and loops that put you within a cool-down of a decent coffee in Staffordshire.

Opening hours shuffle around constantly, especially at weekends — check before you set the alarm. Nothing ruins a long run like sprinting toward a closed shutter.

Stoke-on-Trent and the Potteries

The Glost House, Longton

Set inside the Phoenix Works, built on a simple idea: quality food and drink without the fuss. The industrial pottery-works setting means nobody blinks at trail shoes, and the breakfasts are the kind you plan a long run around rather than the other way round.

The Quarter, Hanley

On Piccadilly in Hanley's food-and-drink quarter, pouring everything from proper coffee to prosecco. Useful when half your run club wants a flat white and the other half has decided 10am is an acceptable time to celebrate a parkrun PB.

Capabilitea, Stoke-on-Trent

Warm, cosy, and serving Staffordshire oatcakes — which we're officially classing as recovery carbs. Tea cakes to tortes if you've earned something sweeter, and you have.

Newcastle-under-Lyme

Piccoloco, Newcastle-under-Lyme

A reputation for some of the finest artisan coffee in Newcastle and Stoke, expertly brewed and taken seriously. The sort of place where asking for a single-origin pour-over gets a nod, not a sigh — even if you're still wearing a race number.

Uttoxeter

BEAR, High Street

Opened in 2016 in a once-derelict retail space and now the town's speciality-coffee landmark: brunch and serious espresso by day, cocktails by night. Design-led enough to make you self-conscious about your damp base layer. Go anyway.

Lichfield, Stafford and Stone

Bod, various

Titanic Brewery's café-bars in Lichfield, Stone, Stafford and Trentham, with coffee from Chartley Coffee, roasted just up the road at Stowe-by-Chartley. Local beans, local beer, and a relaxed room that tolerates a post-long-run debrief of considerable length.

Pair it with the run

Trentham's lake loop is the classic flat-and-pretty option before coffee at the estate's Bod. Cannock Chase has enough trail to humble anyone, Hanley Park does honest laps, and the Trent & Mersey towpath will take you as far as your legs and your excuses allow.

The rules

Order the oatcake without apology. Sit outside if you're still steaming. Cake past 10K: mandatory — this is settled law. And if you drag a running mate along, you can both pocket the refer-a-friend fiver, which covers a very reasonable amount of cake.
