Opening hours shuffle around constantly, especially at weekends — check before you set the alarm. Nothing ruins a long run like sprinting toward a closed shutter.
Bournemouth
Espresso Kitchen, Commercial Road. Cosy and quirky, decorated with vintage newspapers and surfboards, with serious espresso and a strong line in vegan and gluten-free treats. Reliably full of people who've also just done something outdoors and urgently need to sit down.
Ounce, Westbourne. A newer arrival with a big reputation — plants, paintings and very good coffee a short jog from the clifftop. Westbourne is peak leafy cool-down territory.
Poole
Riptide Espresso & Records, Poole High Street. Specialty coffee plus vinyl near the Quay, so you can flick through records while your legs stop vibrating. Recovery has rarely had a better soundtrack.
Coffee Saloon, Canford Cliffs. The original site, where all the bakes and cakes are made, alongside a contemporary menu of sourdough and savoury muffins. Strategically positioned for anyone doing hill reps on the chines.
South Deep, Parkstone Bay Marina. A waterfront garden with views over Parkstone Bay and the general sense you've wandered into someone's very good idea of retirement. Earn it along the harbourside first.
Dorchester
FINCA, Dorchester. Dorset's own specialty roaster opened its first shop here in 2014 and has since spread across the county. County-town miles, then a flat white from the people who roasted it themselves.
Pair it with the run
Poole parkrun in Poole Park — flat, fast and enormous — for the Saturday ritual; the promenade from Bournemouth Pier to Sandbanks for traffic-free seafront miles (sand optional, headwind guaranteed); Hengistbury Head when you want a hill with a sea view; and around Dorchester, quiet Hardy-country lanes where the only spectator is a cow.
