The post-run coffee is not a reward. It's part of the run — the final split. This is one of our county guides to the best independent coffee within cool-down distance of your miles: great beans, proper cake, and staff who don't flinch at a damp runner.
Opening hours shuffle around constantly, especially at weekends — check before you set the alarm. Nothing ruins a long run like sprinting toward a closed shutter.
Leicester
Saints of Mokha, Leicester. An independent roaster going since 2016, weighing out fine-roasted coffee with the precision most of us reserve for race-day porridge. A city-centre benchmark for what Leicester coffee can be.
Leicester Coffee House Company, Leicester. One of the names that comes up every time locals argue about the city's best café — a dependable independent in a city with a quietly excellent coffee scene around the Cultural Quarter and St Martin's Square.
Crafty, Leicester. A local favourite that regulars defend with the intensity of a club runner defending their parkrun PB. Good coffee, good bakes, zero pretension.
Bru, Leicester. A Leicester institution with a devoted following and a cake selection designed for people who have just done something mildly heroic, or at least jogged.
Northern Cobbler, Leicester. Part shop, part café, all Queens Road charm — handy for anyone finishing a Victoria Park loop through Clarendon Park, which is where the city's runners seem to congregate anyway.
Public & Plants, Leicester. The new kid — opened January 2026 inside the Canopy coworking space, doing fresh bread, filled croissants, granola pots and brunch plates. Arrive post-long-run and order like you mean it.
Loughborough
Public, Loughborough. Named Great Food Club Café of the Year 2025/6, set in the old arts college with its own bakery, mismatched chairs and mini cacti. In Britain's unofficial capital of athletics, this is where the miles get debriefed.
Bom Bom Patisserie, Loughborough. Speciality espresso and cookies baked fresh through the day, with Muddy Stilettos Best Café wins to its name. The cookie-to-espresso combination is, scientifically speaking, a recovery protocol.
Olivia's Coffee & Bakery, Loughborough. Independent coffee and speciality teas with bread and cakes baked in-house. Unfussy, friendly, and entirely unbothered by the sight of running kit.
Pair it with the run
Victoria parkrun gives you Leicester's fast, flat Saturday fix, with Braunstone parkrun across town as the alternative. Bradgate Park is the county's crown jewel — proper trails, deer, and the closest thing Leicestershire has to a mountain. The Grand Union Canal towpath does long-run duty through the city, and in Loughborough the River Soar and Queen's Park handle the cool-down before the coffee.
The rules
In the county that trains Olympians, nobody will judge your pace — but they will judge you for skipping the bake. Cake past 10K: mandatory, even (especially) in Loughborough. Rope in a training partner and collect the refer-a-friend fiver while you're at it.
