Opening hours shuffle around constantly, especially at weekends — check before you set the alarm. Nothing ruins a long run like sprinting toward a closed shutter.
Brighton
Redroaster, Kemptown. Roasting on St James's Street since 2000 and the only certified organic roastery in the south of England. A quarter-century of practice shows in the cup. Seafront run east, finish here.
Small Batch Coffee. The Brighton stalwart — get there early (around 8am) to beat the rush and talk single origins with baristas who genuinely care. Perfectly placed for the post-run window.
Moksha Caffé, North Laine. A 2026 BRAVO award winner and a North Laine institution — the locals' pick, which in Brighton is the highest bar there is.
Trading Post Coffee Roasters. In the Lanes and Kensington Gardens — roaster-café theatre in the city's most photogenic maze. Lost in the Lanes and Open Bakery complete the circuit if the queue defeats you.
17Grams. Roasts in-house, pairs it with a strong brunch menu leaning happily vegan. Long-run refuelling with credentials.
Hove (actually)
44 Poets, Poets' Corner. Melbourne-style community café since 2018, co-roasting with Sussex's Craft House Coffee since 2020. The Hove seafront-to-Poets'-Corner finish is a local classic.
Pair it with the run
Sussex running is spoiled: the seafront prom from the Palace Pier to Hove Lagoon (flat, fast, judged only by seagulls), Preston Park's famous parkrun and its cycle-track intervals, the Undercliff path to Rottingdean, and — when your legs want a proper argument — the South Downs Way rising straight off the city's back. Ditchling Beacon is the cake-multiplier: every ascent doubles your pastry entitlement.
The rules
Seafront wind never counts against pace. Cake past 10K: mandatory. The Downs chalk is slippery when wet, and it's always wet. Recruits drink on the refer-a-friend fiver.
